Norway and the Lofotens

Many of these photos were taken while on board the Hurtigruten Kong Harald, also known as the coastal express. We boarded the ship in Bergen and disembarked at Svolvaer on the Lofotens. Photos are in no particular order.

City of Bergen from Fløyen which is a high point above the city. In the distance are are two passenger vessels with the one on the right being the Hurtigruten Kong Harald. Also called the coastal express, the Hurtigruten vessels transport people, mail and cargo along the western coast of Norway.

Much of Ålesund burned to the ground in a great fire in 1904. The Art Nouveau style of architecture was popular at that time and most of the city was rebuilt in that style.

Cod heads are dried on racks that are a bit different in shape to the racks used for drying cod bodies. Most cod heads are sold to Africa and are used in traditional dishes where dried cod head is the main ingredient.

Svolvaer Lofotens

Departed the Hurtigruten at Svolvær on the island of Austvågøya in the Lofotens. No 25 was our cabin while here in Svolvaer.
Hjell Lofoten
These wooden pyramid-shaped racks are called hjell and are the traditional tool used to dry cod during the Norwegian spring. They can bee seen most everywhere along the coast in the Lofotens. This one happened to be just a few feet from the cabin we were staying for the evening.
